Match the card to the hours, then read the do-it-yourself column before you pay, because most of these trips have a cheaper version that costs you a morning of logistics instead. That is why the $25 city walk and the $145 lake day can sit on the same board without either being a bad deal. The honest test is whether you would spend the saved money on a second guide day or on dinner.

A seat on a van you cannot board otherwise

Pacaya is the clearest case. No public bus serves the trailhead, so the card is the transport and there is no walk-up version. The honest extras story: the Viator half-day (product 17499P4) is listed at $35 and collects $55.50 of mandatory extras at checkout, $90.50 in total, and the operator states the extras include the park fee.

The GetYourGuide card at $23 prints no extra line at all, and neither platform prints the park fee itself, because no agency publishes it. The CONAP and INGUAT pages were unreachable and the Q50 figure in forums is unverified. Practical rule: budget for a second charge at checkout on any Pacaya card and treat the listed price as the floor.

A gate ticket you could buy yourself

Hobbitenango publishes its own prices in dollars, $8 day pass, $8 shuttle, so the $35 combo card with Cerro de la Cruz is about $16 of gate and shuttle plus the routing and the guide. The $69 ATV card bundles the same $8 entry with four mountains of riding in six hours. Coffee has a DIY price too, the finca cafe tour at Q100 ($13.09) at fixed hours.

On these cards you are paying for the chaining of stops and the vehicle, and it is worth it only when your time is tighter than your money.

Guides over free streets

The two $25 walking tours and the $25 night walk buy interpretation, not access. Every stop is a street or a church doorway that costs nothing, and the municipal tuk-tuk tariff is Q10 ($1.31) a ride if you would rather cover the distance between stops. Parque Central and La Merced are the stops these walks circle, and both stand on the free list. The guide earns the money by telling you what the stones mean.

Products with no gate at all

Cooking classes and the jade workshop are products, not entries, there is no official price to compare them against, so the review counts do the sorting. The two cooking cards at $38 are the cheapest kitchens on the board, and the Casa San Miguel class at two hours beats the three-hour chef class on time if not on theatre. The jade workshop at $69 sends you home with the piece.

Fuego has been in an eruptive phase under a national orange alert since 3 August 2026 and Acatenango's park gates closed the next day, both summits suspended, with no official reopening published. CONRED bulletins were still reporting Fuego explosions weeks later. Two operators in town still sold Acatenango trips with no closure notice when this page was built, so a card for it exists elsewhere and this guide refuses to carry one.

Pacaya is a different volcano two roads away, open per operator sales, with CONRED reporting only degassing at the Mackenney crater. The city itself sits outside the restricted zones, the UK FCDO restricts only border strips near Mexico, and the tourist assistance line ASISTUR runs 24 hours on 1500 with DISETUR tourist police in Antigua. Volcano cards follow CONRED alert levels, and trails close at short notice when the alert rises.

• - Pacaya: the 14:00 weekend departures are the first to fill, and this operator asks overflow to meet at a set point in town instead of hotel pickups. Take the earlier seat or switch operators before you switch days.
• - The lake: the shared van to Panajachel runs daily, and Adrenalina sells the same routing at $25 with departures at 08:00, 12:30 and 16:00, reserved 48 hours ahead.
• - The market days: both Chichicastenango cards ($95 and $119) sell the same routing, so a sold-out date on one is usually open on the other, and Turansa runs a private shuttle at $160 per trip for up to ten.
• - The beach: Monterrico has one card at $120 and no published shuttle alternative, so a gone date means a different day rather than a different seat.
• - Tikal by air: one card at $465, non-refundable once paid, all sales final, so hold it only when the rest of the trip is fixed.
• - The airport: the two transfer listings in the table are the fallback, and the airport page compares the walk-up shuttle at about Q150 with the $15 pre-booked seat and the $50 private ride.
• - Acatenango and Fuego: no card anywhere should take this booking while the suspension stands, and this page carries none.

Group size, where the listing states it

Several cards print Small group, the ATV and jade cards among them, but most Pacaya and lake listings state nothing at all, so the van size is the operator's secret until you are in it. If six seats versus sixteen matters to you, message the operator before paying, because the platform line will not tell you.

The language line

One Pacaya card states English and Spanish, the cheapest card states Spanish only, and most of the rest state no language, which is not the same as promising English. Confirm in writing before you pay for any departure you cannot run in your own Spanish.
